Adding Sustainability to the Volvo Lineup
For almost 100 years, Volvo has been at the forefront of safety technology. Now the automaker is leading the way with the Volvo Recharge line of electric and hybrid vehicles. This luxurious lineup gives drivers the choice of plug-in hybrid cars and fully electric vehicles without giving up the safety standards that have defined Volvo for generations.
Pure Electric vs. Hybrid
To meet the needs of drivers, the Volvo Recharge line includes two vehicles that run on pure electric mode and five that run with a hybrid mode. The fully electric cars have a large 78 kWh battery that drivers need to charge either at home or a public charging station. The battery powers two electric motors for the smooth all-wheel-drive experience and high-performance power.
The Volvo Recharge range is about 208 miles, and with a DC fast charger, the battery reaches a 70% charge in about 40 minutes. Using pure electric power, the Volvo Recharge line reduces our carbon footprint as zero-emissions vehicles.
For drivers who need a longer range, the Volvo Plug-in Hybrid line comes with an electric motor and a combustion engine. The electric motor can run on its own for about 19 miles, while the combustion engine takes over when the battery’s energy is consumed.
The combustion engine and electric motor work together to deliver outstanding horsepower. Like the fully electric Recharge line, the hybrid models use brake energy regeneration to keep the electric motor functioning even with minimal battery power. With a plug-in hybrid, most of the Volvo hybrid models deliver an EPA-estimated fuel economy of around 25/30 MPGe.
Models
The two fully electric models include the C40 Recharge Crossover and XC40 Recharge SUV. The five plug-in hybrid models include the S60 Recharge Sedan, S90 Recharge Sedan, V60 Recharge Estate, XC60 Recharge SUV, and XC90 Recharge SUV.
The entire Volvo Recharge line comes standard with all-wheel drive, a 100% leather-free interior for added sustainability, Hey Google access, and a plethora of standard safety and driver-assistive features.
The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety gave all of the models in the Volvo Recharge line the Top Safety Pick Plus designation. To avoid collisions, Volvo added standard safety features like automated emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control.
Maintenance, Use, Cost
A pure electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle usually comes with a higher sticker price than a vehicle with a combustion engine. Drivers get a return on their investments with lower maintenance and fuel costs. Both models require electricity to charge the batteries, and the quickest way to charge your Volvo at home is with a Level 2 charging box.
To make electric and plug-in vehicles more affordable, drivers can take advantage of tax credits and other incentives for buying the vehicle and installing a Level 2 charging station at your home. Some public charging stations are free to use, while others require users to pay a small fee.
Another important consideration is how much driving you plan on doing with your hybrid or electric vehicle. With a pure electric Recharge model, drivers have to consider where they are going and how many charging stations are on their routes.
With the hybrid plug-in, drivers don’t have to worry about running out of battery because the combustion engine takes over and uses traditional fuel. But, with a hybrid plug-in, drivers who can stay within their Recharge’s battery range could see upwards of 50 MPGe, especially if they never need to use the combustion engine. Once the battery is exhausted, the hybrid Recharge gets gas mileage numbers like a typical combustion engine Volvo.
