When Do Brakes Need Service?
There are many components that make up the brake system. That’s why a regular brake inspection is needed to ensure everything is working the way it should. Most often, the brake pads need to be replaced, but you might also need new rotors, calipers, or lines. In general, the brake pads will be replaced every 30,000 to 70,000 miles, depending on what kind you are using and how you drive.
However, you want to schedule brake service if there’s any trouble stopping your vehicle. If the stopping time is getting longer, you want the vehicle looked at. Additionally, if you hear a squeaking or squealing noise when you push down the brake pedal, it could be a sign of worn brake pads. Once that noise becomes a grinding sound, you could need new brake rotors, as well. Don’t neglect any signs of trouble with the brake parts or you could put your on-road safety at risk.
What are Brake Rotors & How Long Do They Last?
Brake rotors are circular discs on each wheel of the vehicle. The brake pads push against the rotors to stop when the brake pedal is pushed down. When the brake pads are operating as intended, the brake rotors tend to remain in good condition. However, they can become warped when you use worn-out brake pads. During the regular brake service, the rotors will also be inspected.
Most brake rotors will last 70,000 miles or more if they are taken care of. Sometimes, the rotors don’t need to be replaced during the brake service, but can just be resurfaced. Just like with the brake pads, you don’t need to replace all four rotors at the same time. However, you always want to replace both front or both back rotors at the same service, helping to keep things uniform. The best way to prolong the life of the brake rotors is to be gentle with the pedal and to have service at the first sign of trouble.
What is Brake Fluid & When Should it Be Flushed?
The brake fluid is the hydraulic fluid that runs through the brake lines from the master cylinder to provide the force needed when you push down the pedal. Over time, it can become contaminated and dirty, just like any automotive fluid, which is why the brake fluid exchange or flush should be included with the standard brake service. We recommended having the brake fluid flush every 30,000 miles or two years, whichever occurs first.
To avoid any other auto repair services, it’s also wise to have the lines and systems checked for leaks. With the right amount of maintenance, you ensure that the car stops when you want it to and you avoid costly repairs down the road. If you aren’t sure how to check the brake fluid, stop by so our technicians can take a peek. We will top it off when needed or we can flush it as part of the regular brake service. It’s our job to ensure your car runs as it was intended.
