E Copper Metallic, one of only two exterior colors introduced exclusively with the launch of the first-ever BMW i8 Roadster in 2018 and never offered on any i8 prior, paired with standard Frozen Grey metallic accents throughout. Of the 20,465 i8s produced across the entire six-year run, only 3,884 were Roadsters, and E Copper was available for none of them before the body style existed. The color and the car arrived together.
Motivation comes from BMW's eDrive plug-in hybrid system pairing a 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder driving the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic with an electric motor driving the front wheels through a dedicated two-speed unit, producing a combined 369 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. Zero to sixty arrives in 4.4 seconds with a 155-mph electronically limited top speed. Up to 18 miles of pure electric range is on offer, with the ability to cruise on electric power alone at speeds up to 75 mph.
The structure underneath is what separates the i8 from anything else in its price bracket. The passenger cell is a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic Life module bonded not welded to an aluminum Drive module integrating the powertrain, high-voltage battery, suspension, and crash structure. The Roadster's frameless gullwing doors are CFRP with an aluminum outer shell, and the windscreen frame itself is carbon fiber. Despite being a fully engineered convertible, curb weight comes in at 3,513 pounds just 132 pounds over the coupe. The fabric soft top opens and closes electrically in 15 seconds and operates at speeds up to 31 mph.
BMW's i8 drivetrain won the International Engine of the Year Award in three consecutive years from 2015 through 2017. Production ended permanently in June 2020 with no successor announced.
